Petrus Spronk

Introduction
Petrus Spronk (born 1939, Haarlem, Netherlands) is a distinguished, interdisciplinary Australian artist based in Hepburn Springs, Victoria. After migrating to Australia in 1957, he initially trained as a pastry baker before transitioning to the South Australian School of Arts, where he specialized in sculpture and ceramics under master potter Milton Moon.
Spanning over five decades, Spronk’s career balances large-scale public art with intimate, elemental crafts. He is widely recognized for his iconic public sculpture Architectural Fragment (1992), embedded outside the State Library of Victoria. His diverse practice also encompasses transient sand installations, conceptual daily photography, and wood-fired ceramics inspired by traditional Native American techniques. Deeply rooted in the surrounding forest where he digs his own clay, Spronk’s work emphasizes creative resilience, simplicity, and a belief that art should awaken wonder.
