Introduction

David Carlin is an award-winning writer, director, and creative artist who has worked across narrative nonfiction, theatre, film, and circus. His books include How to Dress for Old Age (2026), The After-Normal (2019), The Abyssinian Contortionist (2015), and Our Father Who Wasn’t There (2010). He has edited five books, including The Near and the Far (2016); his essays have appeared in Overland, Meanjin, Griffith REVIEW, Hunger Mountain, Westerly and Sydney Review of Books. David trained as a theatre director at Flinders University Drama Centre, before going on to do a postgraduate diploma in filmmaking at the Victorian College of the Arts and a PhD in creative writing at the University of Melbourne. Emeritus Professor at RMIT University, he co-founded the WrICE cultural exchange program and the non/fictionLab research group.
