Meet the Guest Storytellers for the Cicada Story Slam

The much-loved Cicada Story Slam is returning for a special evening of raw, unfiltered storytelling as a feature of the annual Words in Winter Festival. Hosted by local favourite Maia Irell, this year's event invites the community to lean into the festival theme: Curiouser and Curiouser.

While the heart of the night relies on brave audience members putting their names into a hat to share a five-minute true, personal story, we are absolutely thrilled to announce our three special guest storytellers from the Words in Winter program who will be stepping up to the mic to share their own curious tales: Thuy On, Shele Parker Black, and Erin Riley.

Meet Our Special Guests

Thuy On

Thuy On is an accomplished arts journalist, critic, editor, and poet, based in West Footscray. Well-known for her sharp insight and beautifully crafted verse, Thuy’s work deeply observes the human condition. Her perspective promises to bring a rich, lyrical depth and a beautifully framed narrative to the Cicada stage.

Shele Parker Black

Shele Parker Black is a Maldon resident and a talented writer, educator, and community arts producer. With a wealth of experience in bringing community voices to life, Shele knows exactly how to hook an audience. Her storytelling seamlessly blends professional craft with the authentic, everyday moments that connect us all.

Erin Riley

Erin Riley is a powerful writer and social worker now living in Lutruwita (but called Daylesford home in 2025). Known for their ability to navigate complex themes with deep empathy and honesty, Erin’s storytelling often explores identity, belonging and the extra-ordinary hidden within everyday survival. Their presence on stage is sure to be magnetic and deeply engaging.
