Michael Webster, distinguished publisher, explains why written books remain a vital part of our culture as sales continue to boom.

Michael Webster is a towering figure in Australian book publishing. He has over 45 years’ experience in publishing and academia, including board membership of the Australian Publishers Association, the Australian Booksellers Association, Copyright Agency, and the Literature Board of the Australia Council. An Adjunct Professor at RMIT University, he introduced Bookscan, the book sales tracking service, to the Australian industry, recently retired as Chair of the Melbourne Writers Festival and now chairs the Small Press Network (SPN), the membership organisation for small and independent publishers. In 2008 he was awarded the George Robertson Award for services to the Australian publishing industry.
